K.R. Narayanan

Born in Kerala on February 4, 1921. Went to the London School of Economics on a Tata Scholarship (1945) and took B.Sc. Degree (Econ.) with first class Honours specialising Political Science. Starting his career as a university lecturer he moved briefly into journalism before joining Indian Foreign Service (1949), held several positions at the Ministry of External Affairs including that of Secretary of the Ministry and was India's Ambassador to Thailand, Turkey, the People's Republic of China and the United States of America. Was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru fellowship (1970-72) for a study of Nehru's non-alignment and held the position of Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (1979-80). Member of Indian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics and Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram. Was elected to Lok Sabha (1986, 89, 91), Vice President of India (1992) and President of India (1997). Is the author of many books: Non-alignment in Contemporary International Relations (Jointly with Prof. K.P.Misra) India and America, Essays in Understanding, Images an Insights, Nehru and His Vision and two titles in Malayalam: Ulkazhchakal, Nehruvinte Veekshanangal.
